Aerospace/Aviation Industry

Product testing for aerospace and defense aviation applications is one of the most critical product tests to get right. The failure of even one component can spell disaster for a commercial airline, original equipment manufacturer (OEM), avionics military contractor and the civilian lives and armed forces personnel involved. That’s why reliability testing is critical to the proper outfitting and maintenance of existing aircraft, as well as the design of new ones.

Interestingly, one of the first sectors to embrace Accelerated Stress Testing (AST) was the aerospace industry. Boeing’s introduction of the 777 in 1995 enjoyed the shortest period of any commercial aircraft to go from development to market thanks in part to AST testing. Today, the plane still boasts a higher than 99 percent reliability rating — again thanks to careful examination of every component used in its design.

Also, other OEMs and aircraft manufacturers, like Airbus, are busy applying AST testing retroactively to both their components and their fleets. Even the U.S. Department of Defense is looking to more robust testing procedures to increase the performance and reliability of its aircraft and armament, such as those used in the Joint Strike Fighter program.

In all situations involving the need for reliable product testing for the aerospace industry, Quality Testing Services, LLC is a prime example of a lab that has prioritized the testing needs of its clients at all times. With state-of-the-art equipment, specialized testing chambers and more than 35 years of engineering and testing experience in-house, we know how to supply the most trustworthy test results. Thanks to our knowledge of the aerospace industry, you can count on the attention and guidance your product needs to be a best-in-class component.

HALT Testing for the Aerospace Industry

Whenever innovation needs to be tempered by reliability, you can count on HALT — or Highly Accelerated Life Testing — to discover on average more than 30 percent of the product flaws and weaknesses that other tests would entirely miss. The reason for this is in the ingenious design of HALT testing. It uses incrementally increasing levels of thermal and vibration stress, as well as the two combined, to push a workpiece to failure in a matter of hours. In contrast, traditional tests take days or even weeks and still might not give you the same quality results.

HALT testing results are used in the design phase of an aviation product, allowing engineers to make any necessary adjustments to a component so it meets their expectations and any standards or regulatory requirements — such as those from the FAA or MIL-STD-810 — before it moves on to the production phase.

HASS Testing for Aerospace Industry

Once an aviation component enters the production and manufacturing stages, it’s critical to reduce the risks involved with quality control of upstream suppliers’ materials, as well as any issues associated with manufacture and assembly. In many ways, this stage is even more crucial than testing during the design phase, since the next step is to bring the component to a market where any undiscovered failures or weaknesses can cause the most significant harm to both the public and the product manufacturer.

HASS — or Highly Accelerated Stress Screening — is the test used to uncover any flaws associated with materials and manufacturing once a product enters the production phase. Building on the parameters of its earlier HALT testing, a workpiece is exposed to increasing levels of stress designed to exceed its product specifications while not exceeding its HALT levels. In this way, manufacturers can be sure that when the product leaves their factory, it’s up to the challenges it will face in its real-world application.
