HALT Testing for the Aerospace Industry
Whenever innovation needs to be tempered by reliability, you can count on HALT — or Highly Accelerated Life Testing — to discover on average more than 30 percent of the product flaws and weaknesses that other tests would entirely miss. The reason for this is in the ingenious design of HALT testing. It uses incrementally increasing levels of thermal and vibration stress, as well as the two combined, to push a workpiece to failure in a matter of hours. In contrast, traditional tests take days or even weeks and still might not give you the same quality results.
HALT testing results are used in the design phase of an aviation product, allowing engineers to make any necessary adjustments to a component so it meets their expectations and any standards or regulatory requirements — such as those from the FAA or MIL-STD-810 — before it moves on to the production phase.
